JASPER, Ind. – On August 5th, last Thursday, Senator Mike Braun and Representative Louie Gohmert sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra demanding answers on where illegal immigrants have been sent or transported in the United States, how many were sent, if they were tested for COVID, and how many tested positive.
Receipt of the letter was acknowledged by the Department of Health and Human Services, but not the Department of Homeland Security, the department tasked with securing the nation from foreign threats and border security.
Signed by 4 U.S. Senators and 25 Members of the U.S. House of Representatives, the letter has now been ignored by the Department of Homeland Security for a week as migrants continue to flock to our border in the highest numbers in 20 years.
Our unsecured southern border represents a dire national security threat. Recent data have shown that single adults now account for 64% of migrant encounters at the border, up from 28% this time in 2019 (Pew – August 10, 2021).
Migrants from countries around the world are taking advantage of our weak border. In June, 26% of border migrant encounters involved migrants from countries outside Mexico and the Northern Triangle, up from 9% in May of 2019 (Pew – August 10, 2021).
Americans deserve to know where illegal immigrants apprehended at the U.S. border are ending up in the country, as well as if they were tested for COVID before being released.
