Washington (August 5, 2021) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) released the following statement on the passing of AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka:

“I am deeply saddened by the untimely passing of AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka. His dedication was legendary; he was never one to mince words when it served his members’ purpose or to take a stand when the occasion called for it. He was a man who commanded the respect of multiple Administrations, Congress and state governments around the country. He and I bonded over our fathers – both proud members of organized labor who knew the value of a hard day’s work, an honest wage, and a career with dignity. He was a supporter of clean energy and green jobs for America’s working men and women.”

“At a moment when organized labor is making a comeback against corporate forces who have spent billions trying to crush it, Richard’s legacy will inspire us to fight every single day for the working men and women he dedicated his life in service to. We should honor him by passing the PRO Act immediately, legislation that Richard fought tirelessly for this year.”
