WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senator Jacky Rosen (D-NV), released the following statement applauding the Senate passage of her and Senator James Risch’s (R-ID) amendment as part of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act:
“Across the country, we are seeing the impact of wildfires in our communities, in our western states, and in Nevada. As we speak, the Tamarack fire is devastating the Nevada-California border and local communities. Right now, the entire state of Nevada and over 90% of the West is currently experiencing a drought, increasing the likelihood and severity of wildfires. These wildfires can severely damage our roads and highways,” said Senator Rosen. “I’m proud to see my bipartisan amendment, which will increase the resiliency of the National Highway System and mitigate the cost of damages from natural disasters like wildfires, pass the Senate this evening. My amendment will allow for federal assistance to repair damages to our highways from these extreme weather events.”
BACKGROUND: This bipartisan amendment adds wildfires as a specified damage for which federal assistance from the National Highway Performance Program may be used to rebuild damaged highways.
