WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) today was joined by Senators Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, in introducing a Senate Resolution commemorating the 200th anniversary of Peru’s independence. The bipartisan Resolution celebrates the many achievements and triumphs of the Peruvian community and the strength of the United States’ relationship with Peru, which is rooted in the countries’ shared commitment to democratic principles and freedoms.

“I am proud to join Peruvians in Peru, in New Jersey, and around the world in observance of the country’s 200 years of independence,” Chairman Menendez said. “Today we not only celebrate Peru’s extraordinary contributions as an architectural and ecological treasure and hub of cultural and linguistic exchange, but also the importance of its longstanding commitment to democratic principles. On this bicentennial celebration, I look forward to continue working with New Jersey’s vibrant Peruvian-American community to advance the U.S.-Peru partnership.”

“The 200th anniversary of Peru’s independence is an important event not just for Peru, but for people across Latin America and here in the U.S. Peru’s independence was born of struggle and marked the beginning of the Peruvian people’s quest to establish a government committed to advancing democracy, prosperity, and security,” Senator Kaine said. “I am grateful for the United States’ partnership with Peru, based in our shared commitment to transparent governance, rule of law, human rights, and inclusive economic development. And I’m proud of the Peruvian community in Virginia and their many contributions to our Commonwealth. I wish all Peruvians and Peruvian-Americans Felices Fiestas Patrias!”
