WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, released the following statement regarding the agreement reached by Appropriations Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) and Ranking Member Richard Shelby (R-Ala.) on an emergency security supplemental funding package:
“As we witnessed in great detail today, on January 6th, and throughout the subsequent weeks, members of the U.S. Capitol Police Force, the National Guard, and D.C. Metropolitan Police stepped up to protect our nation’s capital and our democracy. When we needed them, these public servants risked their lives and answered the call, and now, our country needs to be there for them. That’s why I worked with my colleagues on the Appropriations Committee to release this package that will fund the U.S. Capitol Police and help prevent another attack of this nature from ever happening again. Along with resources to keep our U.S. Capitol Police on the job, this security package provides essential funds to reimburse our Maryland National Guard Members who defended our democracy, as well as the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department. In order to ensure these men and women can continue to serve our nation, it’s absolutely crucial that we pass this package at once, and I’m committed to getting it done.”
