In Massachusetts, 1.1 million children will benefit from this expanded Child Tax Credit, 43 percent of whom are children of color

Washington (July 15, 2021) – Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) released the following statement as the first monthly payments for the expanded Child Tax Credit (CTC) in the American Rescue Plan are released today.  This marks the largest investment in families and children in the modern era with over 4.1 million children nationally who will be lifted above the poverty line, slicing the total number of children in poverty by more than 40 percent.

Today families across the country and Commonwealth can breathe a sigh of relief as money begins to fill pockets and lift children out of poverty. This historic investment into families and children is the first step to dramatically reduce child poverty in our country, but it cannot be the last. We must harness the momentum of this enormous achievement, make the expanded Child Tax Credit permanent, and ensure every eligible family is receiving this family-supporting, life-changing assistance.”

In order to receive the child tax credit, people must file tax returns with the IRS. To check if your child is eligible visit https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/2021-child-tax-credit-and-advance-child-tax-credit-payments-frequently-asked-questions.
