Gallup, N.M. – U.S. Senator Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) today met with members of the Navajo Nation Human Rights Office and Navajo Nation Board of Elections to discuss his plans to reintroduce the Native American Voting Rights Act (NAVRA) to ensure equal access to voting for Tribal members and voters living on Tribal lands.

“On top of geographic and linguistic barriers that make it harder for Tribal members to vote, restrictive and burdensome voter registration requirements and I.D. laws are suppressing the Native vote across America. Congress must act to preserve every American’s right to vote and ensure Tribal governments can safeguard these rights for their citizens,” said Luján. “When the Senate returns to session, I’ll be re-introducing the Native American Voting Rights Act. I appreciated hearing directly from members of the Navajo Nation Board of Election and Human Rights Office about the challenges their citizens face, so together we can strengthen this legislation and effectively protect Tribal members’ right to vote and Tribes’ inherent sovereignty.”
