WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Chairwoman of the Senate Rules Committee with jurisdiction over federal elections and campaign finance law, issued the following statement on the Supreme Court’s ruling in Brnovich v. DNC:

“The freedom to vote is fundamental to all of our freedoms. In the face of efforts to roll back voting rights in so many states – with a disproportionate impact on communities of color – the Supreme Court’s decision is yet another affront to Americans’ constitutional right to pick their elected officials.

“As Justice Kagan wrote in dissent, the Voting Rights Act ‘deserves the sweep and power Congress gave it. That law, of all laws, should not be diminished by this Court.’

“In Congress, this fight has just begun – that’s why, as Chairwoman of the Rules Committee, I announced last week that I will hold a series of hearings on the urgent need to pass critical voting, campaign finance, and ethics reforms, including a field hearing in Georgia. In the face of these unprecedented attacks, we must move quickly to ensure our democracy works for every American.”
