HARTFORD–U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) announced that New Haven-based Protein Evolution, Inc. (PEI) was named March’s “Innovator of the Month.” Founded in late 2021, PEI uses a combination of chemistry and enzyme technology to break down polyester waste into the raw materials of good-as-new polyester products. By diverting landfill-bound materials into the company’s biological recycling process, Protein Evolution hopes to lead the transition to a lower carbon, more circular economy.

“Protein Evolution is a great example of a Connecticut company thinking big about how to reduce our environmental footprint. Their technology gives plastic waste a new life and has the potential to transform the way we recycle. I’m proud to recognize their innovative work and look forward to watching them grow in our state,” said Murphy.

“We’re honored to be recognized by Senator Murphy with this award,” said Connor Lynn, Protein Evolution’s Co-founder and Chief Business Officer. “The recognition encourages our commitment to unlock the potential of plastic waste as a starting point for new plastic materials. Our technology will increase the operating efficiency of the chemicals, textiles, and food and beverage industries by allowing them to make new products from old plastic.”

Murphy believes entrepreneurship and innovation are the building blocks for a strong economy. In the U.S. Senate, he has introduced legislation to incentivize angel investors to put more money into startup companies—the Angel Tax Credit Act. Startup companies create an average of 2 million jobs each year and are necessary change agents for industries, like waste management.
