QUITO, ECUADOR – Senator John Hoeven met with Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso in Quito this week as part of a bipartisan congressional delegation to review bilateral relations. During meetings in Ecuador, the leaders discussed the importance of working together to stop the flow of illegal migration and curb drug trafficking for the good of both nations.

“We had a good meeting with President Lasso, who was just recently sworn in as president of Ecuador,”said Hoeven. “We have an opportunity to build a strong relationship with his government and the people of Ecuador to advance our democratic values and address our common interests, including limiting Chinese influence in the region and working together to stem the flow of illegal migrants and illicit drugs coming through Ecuador to the United States. We need to do all we can together to prevent drug trafficking and stop these harmful substances from infiltrating our communities.”

In Quito, the delegation also met with members of the Ecuadorian government, including the President of the National Assembly Guadalupe Llori, members of the National Assembly Legislative Administrative Council, as well as Ecuador’s Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Defense, Government and Commerce to discuss issues including security, migration and drug trafficking. Additionally, the senators visited the Hogar de la Madre San Francisco migrant shelter.

Hoeven traveled to Mexico City earlier this week and to Quito as part of a bipartisan congressional delegation led by Senators Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio).
